Himalayan Monal

Lophophorus impejanus · Danphe · डाँफे

The Himalayan Monal is known in Nepal as Danphe. This pheasant is Nepal’s national bird and an introduction to the bird life of the Himalayas. A colourful adult male is only one part of the identification story: females look very different.

Identification clues

Adult males show iridescent colours that change with the light. Females have much more subdued, patterned plumage. Compare body shape, head and tail as well as colour; a dark photograph can hide the features that seem obvious in a reference image.

Habitat and observation

Use mountain habitat as context when comparing a possible monal. The species is associated with Himalayan forests and open areas near the upper forest zone. Habitat can support an identification, but it cannot confirm a bird on its own.

Compare the evidence

Start with the whole bird rather than a single bright feather. Note whether you can see the crest, body pattern and tail. Compare photographs of the same sex where possible. If those details are missing, keep the identification tentative.

Using Nepal Bird ID

Himalayan Monal is one of this model’s 85 trained species. A photo result offers three suggestions and model scores; those scores are not verified probabilities. Compare the visible features and sourced references before recording a sighting.
